Tasks Summary

The volunteers will take active part in the realization of different projects at the local Special Vocational Education Laboratories (SEEKK), offering help to the education of young people aged 14 to 22. The independent school of Special Education is under the Directorate of Secondary Education. It is addressed to pupils with diagnosed as having severe special educational needs, which are a result: (a) a specific disability (mental deficiency, mental immaturity, particularly severe visual and hearing impairment, autism, etc.), (b) Multiple disabilities (mental retardation combined with severe visual and hearing impairment, mental retardation combined with autism), (c) Complex cognitive, emotional and social difficulties certified by a CEDD or recognized medical and educational services. The tasks of the volunteer depend of the needs of the Institution, the capacity of the volunteer and will be around Education, Environment, New Technologies, Culture and Sports. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements The ESC volunteers are hosted in an apartment in a Chios Island's village which is within a walking distance from working places, minimarket, pharmacy, beach etc., equipped with the necessary electrical appliances & furniture to cover all their basic needs. They live in gender based shared rooms with other volunteers & are responsible for keeping their hosting & working place clean & in order. They are responsible for making a cooking schedule at home & provide to the Hosting Organization a weekly list of the goods that they need for meals preparation in order to supply them with. Training during the activity Under guidance and help of the institution’s staff, the volunteers will assist to the education of the young people of the institution. Additional to this, they will realize a “Personal Project”, which will be defined in cooperation with the Hosting Organisation. They will “Learn by Producing" Articles and Presentations for New Technologies Projects. If possible, they will create new ideas and propose activities in projects organized by the schools. They will also promote the the ESC Program by publishing the results of their activities at the web sites of the H/O. Participant profile We strongly believe that all the young people who are willing to collaborate & are thirsty for learning, can realize a very good & fruitful program as long as they are not afraid to “get their hands dirty” & see the glass as "half full" instead of “half empty"! Because the public schools are a "live Organism", our only requirement is the volunteer to be positive, creative, flexible, ready to offer also respect and adapt to our Island’s community and habits. Will be highly appreciated the volunteers who have experience or studied a) A specific disability (mental deficiency, mental immaturity, particularly severe visual and hearing impairment, autism, etc.), (b) Multiple disabilities (mental retardation combined with severe visual and hearing impairment, mental retardation combined with autism), (c) Complex cognitive, emotional and social difficulties certified by a CEDD or recognized medical and educational services.
