Tasks Summary

Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped (KSPH) is a primary school catering to the educational needs of disabled children in Uganda. Started in 1968 by a few parents of cerebral palsied children, the school aims at educating, rehabilitating and equipping physically handicapped children for self-reliance and development. It follows the national syllabus including co-curricular activities like sports, music, dance and drama, spiritual fellowship, and educational tours. It also offers vocational subjects like tailoring, screen printing, craft, tie-dye, and computer training to all children who cannot continue with further education. The school has an enrollment of 100 pupils with physical disabilities between the ages of 6–18, including those with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, and polio among others. Therefore, the school specifically provides for children with special needs. It has a teaching staff of 13 teachers. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements Volunteers will stay at Villa Mamu, Mengo, Kampala, a residence with WiFi, a warm shower, a kitchen, and pets. The volunteer shall prepare their own meals and living in own room. Other accommodation options in Kampala can be arranged based on safety and convenience. Local transport mainly consists of boda-bodas (motorcycle taxis). The project is in Kampala and in a walkable distance from Villa Mamu Training during the activity As part of the BRIDGE Project (Building Resilience, Innovation, Development, and Gender Equality), volunteers will work toward empowering vulnerable communities, especially women. Training includes skills development workshops, digital literacy enhancement, participation in UN Women Summits, and facilitating digital training sessions. Volunteers will gain hands-on experience in capacity building, stakeholder engagement, and social impact-driven project execution while refining leadership and communication skills. Participant profile Experience: Working with children with special needs. Emotional Strength: The volunteer must have a close connection with children with special needs and be emotionally strong. Skills Advantage: Having experience in caring for children with special needs, or occupational and physiotherapy skills, is an added advantage. Communication: Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with children with disabilities or special needs. Patience and Openness: Working with physically disabled and special needs children requires patience, emotional resilience, and the ability to handle challenging situations. Volunteers must approach these situations with an open heart and understanding.
