Overview

NGO MONDO CIVS COMMUNITY SERVICE Volunteer opportunity: Environmental Expert in Kenya

Tasks Summary

Implemented by CIVS Kenya, this initiative takes place at the Resource Centers in Nyakach and Kuth Awendo, located in the Kano Plains of Kisumu County. In this region, many families rely on agriculture for their livelihoods but face recurring challenges from seasonal flooding that threaten food security and economic stability. As a volunteer, you will work alongside community members to raise awareness on climate change adaptation, promote climate-smart agriculture, and lead tree planting initiatives that help restore degraded land and reduce the impact of flooding. You’ll also support community workshops and school outreach activities that teach youth and adults about sustainable land use, soil and water conservation, and environmental stewardship—empowering local communities to build a more resilient and sustainable future. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements Accommodation will be arranged at a shared rented flat within the region with a bathroom and toilet. CIVS will furnish the room with a few pieces of furniture and basic equipment for the kitchen and bathroom. The apartment will have electricity and water, though volunteers may on some occasions experience disruptions of these services. Volunteers will be taught how to clean their own clothes using their hands by our local mentors. Volunteers will prepare their own meals at the apartment. Transport to the projects is by motorcycle. Transport to the market, and to Kisumu City is by public vans. Training during the activity This opportunity is part of the BRIDGE project (Building Resilience, Innovation, Development and Gender Equality), in which volunteers will have the chance to work on a common objective: empowerment and skills development of vulnerable communities, with a focus on women groups and enhance digital skills, participate in UN Women Summits and animating digital workshops. Visit: https://mondo.org.ee/en/volunteers/ Participant profile Environment Expert should have a basic understanding of climate change, floods, and their effects on local communities and ecosystems. They should know how rainfall, rivers, and terrain contribute to flooding and be able to suggest farming methods suited to flood-prone areas. Strong community engagement skills are essential, including the ability to raise awareness about environmental conservation, waste management, and flood preparedness. The role requires adaptability to rural conditions and a hands-on attitude for tasks like tree planting, soil movement, and farm work. Experience in farming, tree planting, and promoting sustainable land use is highly valuable for this position. Candidates must be 18 to 35 years old, reside in one of the eligible countries (EU Member State, North Macedonia, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Turkey), have completed the compulsory Humanitarian Aid Volunteering training and not have participated before in individual Humanitarian Aid Volunteering. When adding together this new volunteering opportunity and any previous participation in EU volunteering programmes, the total duration cannot exceed 12 months.
