Education Officer

Overview

The Education Officer will support and oversee the implementation of the Refugee Education 2030 strategy, ensuring UNHCR's programming aligns with Sustainable Development Goals and promoting inclusive and equitable quality education for refugee and host community children and youth.

Tasks Summary

• - Translate global education objectives into guidance, strategies, and priorities.
• - Engage and foster partnerships with education stakeholders.
• - Provide technical advice and support on education programmes.
• - Support senior management in advocacy activities.
• - Participate in humanitarian and development sector working groups.
• - Assist in elaborating and implementing strategies for education access, quality, and data.
• - Foster inter-sectoral linkages and coordination.
• - Monitor and support implementation of education programmes.
• - Support and monitor the implementation of Global Refugee Forum pledges.
• - Assist in planning and coordination of UNHCR's role concerning education.
• - Identify training needs and train staff and partners.
• - Support the development and dissemination of relevant tools.
• - Support active exchange of information and best practices.
• - Undertake direct dialogue with Country Offices on programme implementation.
• - Join joint assessment missions in emergencies.
• - Lead or co-lead education sector coordination groups in emergency contexts.
• - Prepare, co-ordinate, and oversee drafting of education input in key documents and reports.
• - Encourage, seek, facilitate, and learn from innovative practices in education.
• - Supervise or oversee other education staff where required.

Experience Requirements

• 6 years relevant experience with Undergraduate degree; or 5 years relevant experience with Graduate degree; or 4 years relevant experience with Doctorate degree.
• 4 years of experience in progressively responsible functions in education.
• Demonstrated work experience in education programmes.
• Field experience in education programme implementation and coordination in humanitarian and/or development contexts.
• Experience working with Governments, Ministry of Education and other line Ministries.
• Demonstrated experience implementing education programmes at the regional level and in country operations, ideally in Africa.
• Experience advancing refugee inclusion in national education systems.
• Experience supporting education in emergency preparedness and response, particularly in cross-border or regional displacement settings.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical advice and support remotely across a range of country contexts.
• Experience in coordinating implementation of multi-year donor funding, tracking, and reporting progress.

• Bachelor of Arts: Education
• Bachelor of Arts: Social Science

Other Details

Languages Required: Knowledge of English and UN working language of the duty station if not English and local language.

Languages Preferred: Working knowledge of French, particularly to support francophone operations (Burundi, Djibouti, Rwanda).

Contract Duration: 2026-04-01 to 2026-12-31
