Overview

The intern will support the Population Dynamics, Data, & Policy unit in its work program on population and development indicators, including the collection, analysis, and dissemination of data. The role involves developing and piloting methodologies and technical approaches for producing population and development indicators and supporting countries in generating data for monitoring progress towards strategic plan outcomes, SDGs, and the ICPD programme of action.


Key Responsibilities
  • Identify and compile population and housing census databases and surveys.
  • Contribute to compiling big data and other non-traditional datasets.
  • Contribute to the analysis and updates of population and development indicators.
  • Assist in developing analytical models for filling data gaps.
  • Assist with compiling background documentation for programme summaries and briefing notes.
  • Assist in tracking progress of activities for the Unit’s work plan.
  • Provide support on analysis and evidence about current and emerging population and development trends.
  • Prepare/contribute to various statistical tables and annexes for reports.
Required Experience

Experience working with demographic and health data, e.g. censuses, DHS, MICS, DHIS2, and other survey data would be an asset.

Qualifications
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme, such as master’s programme or higher;
  • Have graduated within the last year with a university degree (bachelor’s or master’s);
  • Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional trainee programme;
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in statistics, mathematics applied to social sciences, actuarial science, economics or demography, etc.

Languages Required
Demonstrate written and spoken proficiency in at least one of the working languages of the United Nations (English or French) and fluency in the official language (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian or Spanish) of the UNFPA office.
Languages Preferred
Excel skill, data analysis skills will be an added advantage. Knowledge of quantitative research methods and ability to work with data is an advantage.

Remuneration
Interns do not receive a salary or any other form of remuneration from UNFPA. They receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, if not financially supported by any institution or programme.
