Overview

The Urban Planning Analyst will provide substantive input to strengthen the technical capacity of the Mesoamerica Office in resilient urban planning. The role involves leading the urban dimension of interventions in four countries and three pilot cities, focusing on integrated urban operations and disaster risk reduction.


Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the urban dimension of interventions in El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, and Cuba, including the formulation of Integrated Urban Operations and urban and territorial planning instruments with a disaster risk reduction focus.
  • Guide urban solutions and contribute from an urban perspective to risk inventories, relevant hazard criteria, and visualization platform requirements.
  • Lead the urban dimension in three pilot cities (Mexico, Cuba, and Honduras) for the UrbanCoast Mesoamerica project, including coastal risk analysis and participatory formulation of Integrated Urban Operations for urban resilience in coastal areas.
  • Articulate methodology between the two portfolios and provide technical input to other urban initiatives.
  • Ensure the transfer of learnings between projects and methodological coherence in the approach to Integrated Urban Operations with a DRR focus.
  • Consolidate internal technical capacities in resilient urban planning for the subregion.
Required Experience
  • At least five (5) years of progressive professional experience in urban and territorial planning, urban design, urbanism, urban regeneration, or urban development management.
  • Proven experience in formulating urban plans, territorial ordering instruments, urban regulations, or urban regeneration projects in cities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate disaster risk reduction, climate change adaptation, and resilience approaches into urban planning processes, articulating with risk management specialists.
  • Experience in international cooperation projects, preferably with UN System agencies, is not a requirement but will be highly valued.
  • Work experience in the Mesoamerica subregion (Central America and/or Cuba) will be an advantage.
Qualifications
  • University degree in urban and territorial planning, urbanism, architecture, urban geography, civil engineering with an urban emphasis, sustainable urban development, or related disciplines.
  • If published bibliographic material in the aforementioned topics is available, it must be indicated in the application and will be taken into account positively.
