Key Responsibilities

You will spend your days with children in primary school (1st graders) and during school break with children in kindergarten (children aged 4-6), every day while parents are at work. Together with 2 teachers in your daily routine you will assist during the regular class hours and help lead sports, language, math, social and nature science, music, design lessons, and in kindergarten also assist play-time in and out-doors, organize visits to other institutions to expand horizon of kids, organize activities for staff, etc. You are invited to be active and come up with Your own creative ideas and develop little concepts of play and projects of Your own initiative. Children of this kindergarten and primary school have special needs and some have disabilities. Valmiera city with nearly 30’000 inhabitants is the economic center of Valmiera county and one of the major cities in Northern Latvia. While it is not too big in European context, it provides all services one might need. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements Accommodation is provided in a rental apartment in the center of Valmiera, shared with other volunteers (can be two same-gender persons per room). Each volunteer is provided with a Latvian phone number and a fast internet plan. A city bus card is provided based on actual needs. Food allowance of €7 per day is provided for meals or groceries. In addition, the kindergarten and Gaujas Krasta School provide one hot lunch daily for their staff. Volunteers also receive additional pocket money of €5 per day. Duration of volunteering activity is flexible (3-12 months). Training during the activity -Pre-departure training on cultural differences, living abroad, volunteer support during mobility, responsibilities, and ESC guidelines will be provided by the sending organization in the volunteer’s home country. -On-arrival and mid-term training will be organized by the National Agency in Latvia. -Latvian language lessons will be offered through a combination of methods, including online tools and live sessions with a language teacher in a small group setting. Participant profile Positive and kind, patient and organized. Able to emotionally and mentally withstand a noisy environment. Resilient and realiable. Genuinely interested in kids well-being. Self-awareness is an essential component in helping others in their needs. You have to understand Your own set of mind and emotions, be able to regulate yourself, so You can help others too.
