Volontarius ODV Bolzano, Italy Volunteer opportunity: Last minute: social activities for refugees and families in North Italy
This activity will feature 4 volunteers engaging in the various services of our organization, supporting homeless people and asylum seekers, including foreign unaccompained minors. Through housing structures, mobile units, our organization assists hundreds of people, thanks to the activity of about 400 people including volunteers and employees. The tasks that may be assigned to the volunteers in the first weeks are helping the young people to do homeworks and improve their language skills by listening and talking with them, introducing the people to the local services and doing some basic paperwork. Gradually, the tasks may improve according to the inputs of the volunteers. The volunteers will occasionally visit other services of the organization, in order to learn multidisciplinary notions in the different social fields encountered. We can agree wit the participant the lenght of the activities. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements The volunteers are going to share a flat with two double rooms, a big living room with the kitchen area. It is located in the north of the city, very close to the city centre and connected to all the locations where the activities will take place. The apartment features a washing machine, dish washer, microwave, wifi and the volunteers will receive a permission to use all the local transports in South Tyrol. The pocket money will be set up according to the Programme Guide, the food is covered by the organization and there will be a travel budget depending on the distance. Training during the activity The volunteers are going to use the Online Language Support, a Italian language course, based on their current level; additional Italian lessons with a local teacher and access to the multilingual center, offering various tools to improve any language. By volunteering alongside social workers, educators and cultural mediators, volunteers will learn about social work, local, national and international laws about migration, asylum and the services involved. Participant profile We look for 1 volunteer (we already found the other 3 participants from Germany and Palestine). Volunteers need to be ready to take on the challenge of meeting many people, with different cultures and life experiences. Social work is conditioned by waiting for public bodies to close their practices, so patience and flexibility is ideal for taking part in this activity. We encourage volunteers to share any personal interest that could help build a specific activity for the people assisted, for example a photography workshop, building handmade music instruments, organizing sport activities.
