Overview
The Lab Officer is responsible for conducting laboratory-based water quality testing and sampling to ensure the safe, accurate, and timely analysis of drinking water samples in targeted communities. The role supports WASH programming by providing data for decision-making and contributing to outbreak prevention.
Tasks Summary
- Conduct laboratory-based water quality testing and sampling.
- Perform laboratory analyses including bacteriological, nitrate, and aesthetic water quality parameters.
- Maintain, operate, and troubleshoot water quality testing equipment.
- Monitor free residual chlorine levels and document findings.
- Maintain a database of water quality results and analyze against standards.
- Report abnormalities to the WASH Coordinator and follow instructions for water treatment actions.
- Support Hygiene Promoters in evaluating intervention effectiveness.
- Prepare weekly and monthly laboratory reports and work plans.
- Document test procedures, findings, and quality checks.
- Contribute to MEAL reporting with verified laboratory data.
- Maintain filing, archiving, and referencing systems for laboratory records.
- Work closely with field teams for coordinated responses.
- Provide technical support during water system assessments and mapping.
- Participate in community mobilization efforts related to drinking water safety.
- Support distribution processes by performing quality checks on water treatment kits.
- Conduct quality assessments on incoming laboratory materials and equipment.
- Ensure laboratory operations adhere to Save the Children’s standards and safety procedures.
- Contribute to the development and review of SOPs.
- Provide on-the-job coaching for volunteers or assistants.
- Conduct trainings on sampling techniques, laboratory safety, and testing procedures.
- Participate in coordination meetings with partners and stakeholders.
- Represent Save the Children professionally in interactions with municipalities, public institutions, and communities.
Experience Requirements
- Professional experience of 2-4 years minimum in Lab analysis and water testing and sampling.
- Experience in field work and community mobilization.
- Experience in conducting training and sensitization sessions for communities and beneficiaries.
- Desirable NGO experience.
- Desirable WASH experience in humanitarian context.
- Desirable familiarity with refugee communities in country of operation.
Qualification Requirements
• University degree in Chemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related scientific field.
