Overview

The Security Coordination Officer will participate in the development of Security Plans to preserve the safety and security of all UN personnel, assets, and operations in the field mission.


Key Responsibilities
  • Prepares draft of security and/or contingency plans for the Mission, designated county or geographic area.
  • Maintains continuing lines of communication with security focal points and all other security entities and/or agencies.
  • Serves as a member of the United Nations Security Cell.
  • Assesses prevailing local security conditions and advises UN staff on potential security problems.
  • Maintains an ongoing evaluation of air, land and sea evacuation routes and resources.
  • Ensures that fire detection devices and fire-fighting equipment are available.
  • Maintains office security by conducting physical security inspections.
  • Maintains and regularly updates RSM measures and provides advice and training to staff.
  • Maintains dialog with authorities and international institutions/INGOs/ Civil Protection Services.
  • Ensures availability of emergency communications system.
  • Investigates security-related incidents involving UN personnel.
  • Assumes responsibility for guard force management when required.
  • Supports protection detail for senior officials when required.
  • Conducts security training.
  • Supports Information’s Unit in coordination with Security Analyst when required.
  • Performs other duties as may be assigned.
Required Experience

A minimum of five years with advanced university degree (seven years with a first-level university degree) of progressively responsible experience in the military, police or security management is required. Experience in UN operations planning and information management, is required. Experience in management of security units in a United Nations common system field operation (inclusive of peacekeeping, political missions and UN agencies, funds, and programmes) or similar international organization or non-governmental organization in a field based environment is desirable. At least two year experience and exposure at the international level is desirable.

Qualifications

An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent such as a senior command and staff qualification) in security management or business administration, political/social/military science or international relations with focus on security management is required; A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience in military, police or security management may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. UNDSS Certification in the Security Analysis Process and Practice Course (SAPP), is required. UNDSS Certification in the Security Certification Programme (SCP), is required.
