Overview
The Economic Affairs Officer monitors economic developments, conducts studies, and formulates policy recommendations to contribute to the region's economic and social development. The role provides substantive support to intergovernmental bodies and designs technical cooperation projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitors economic developments in a defined area and identifies recurrent and emerging issues.
- Designs and conducts studies of selected issues in economic development and drafts resulting reports.
- Develops draft policy recommendations pertaining to the area of work.
- Formulates proposals for development strategies, policies and measures.
- Attends international, regional, and national meetings.
- Organizes expert group meetings, seminars, etc. on development issues.
- Prepares speeches and other presentation inputs for the Executive Secretary.
- Provides substantive support on economic issues to intergovernmental bodies.
- Represents the organizational unit at international, regional and national meetings.
- Designs and monitors technical cooperation projects.
- Designs and undertakes in depth cooperation activities with emerging economies.
- Undertakes missions to member states as part of technical cooperation activities.
- Prepares global, regional, national or sector analyses.
- Supports junior staff, reviewing their work and providing feedback.
- Participates in intra- and inter-departmental undertakings.
- Performs other related duties as required, including administrative tasks.
- Undertakes on-the-job and other training activities.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights using data visualization methods.
Required Experience
- A minimum of seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in economic research and analysis, policy formulation, application of economic principles in development programmes or related area is required.
- At least three (3) years of experience dealing with international trade and integration in Latin America and the Caribbean is required.
- Experience managing cooperation activities with national governments and academic institutions from emerging economies is required.
- Experience working in an international organization is desirable.
- Experience in international negotiations is desirable.
- Publications on international and economic relations of Latin America and the Caribbean with other emerging economies are desirable.
- Two (2) years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Qualifications
- Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in economics or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
- Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
