Overview

Support the Policy and Programme Division of the United Nations Environment Programme by collecting, cleaning, and analyzing quantitative and geospatial data to assess environmental impact indicators and project outcomes.


Key Responsibilities
  • Collect, clean, and manage quantitative data from international and national statistical sources relevant to UNEP's environmental impact indicators.
  • Build and analyze panel datasets; apply quasi-experimental and statistical methods to estimate causal impacts of UNEP interventions.
  • Conduct geospatial analysis using satellite-derived environmental data to support retrospective impact assessment of UNEP projects.
  • Contribute to portfolio-level aggregation and synthesis of project-level impact estimates, including quantitative meta-analysis.
  • Draft analytical notes, methodology documents, indicator guidance, and sections of formal reports.
  • Support the facilitation of structured workshops and consultations with UNEP project managers.
  • Contribute to presentations, briefings, and talking points for UNEP senior leadership and intergovernmental processes.
  • Provide flexible and ad hoc support to the Directorate in various duties.
Required Experience

A field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required. Experience with GIS tools or cloud-based platforms for processing and analyzing spatial and satellite environmental data. Experience producing analytical documents, policy briefs, or academic writing. Applicants must have a strong knowledge of standard software applications including MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, MS SharePoint, and MS Outlook. Data Analysis, Geo-spatial analysis, MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet one of the following requirements: (a) be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). (b) be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree or equivalent). A university degree in Economics, International Relations, International Development, Law, Environmental Science, or related field with course work in areas such as impact measurement, international development policy, geospatial analysis or related field is preferred. Applicants must be enrolled in a graduate school programme (university degree or equivalent, or higher) or be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent). Applicants must have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
