Overview

The Representative, Human Rights is responsible for following human rights developments in the country and advising the High Commissioner on the human rights situation. The role involves developing strategic relationships with the UN Country Team and representing OHCHR on human rights matters.


Key Responsibilities
  • Follows human rights developments and advises the High Commissioner.
  • Develops strategic relationships with the UN Country Team.
  • Formulates programme of work, budget, and medium-term plan.
  • Manages the Country Office, including supervision and development of staff.
  • Represents OHCHR in meetings with national authorities and international community.
  • Designs, develops, and implements policies and programs to address human rights issues.
  • Promotes ratification and implementation of international human rights mechanisms.
  • Engages with regional intergovernmental organizations, civil society, national human rights institutions, and media.
Required Experience

A minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area, at national and/or international levels, is required. Out of the ten years, five years of experience in managing teams of at least 5 people is desirable. Experience in developing, implementing, and coordinating strategies related to human rights is required. Experience in fundraising and interaction with donors is desirable. At least three years of experience with regional or international organizations is desirable. Field experience in developing and implementing human rights strategies at national levels is desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science or international relations, or other disciplines related to human rights. A first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
