Overview
The Humanitarian Affairs Officer/Reporting will monitor, analyze, and report on humanitarian developments in Afghanistan, supporting senior leadership and contributing to corporate reporting processes.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitors, analyzes and reports on humanitarian developments, disaster relief/management or emergency situations in situations in Afghanistan.
- Supports the reporting requirements of senior leadership and contributes to corporate reporting processes.
- Prepares or contributes to the preparation of various written outputs, including reports, background papers, policy documents, briefings, talking points/key messages, presentations and correspondence.
- Support the preparation of OCHA humanitarian information products by formatting and designing reports, briefs and presentation materials.
- Researches, analyzes and presents information gathered from diverse sources.
- Organizes and prepares studies on humanitarian, emergency relief and related issues.
- Participates in large, complex projects, to include disaster assessment or other missions.
- Partners with other humanitarian agencies to plan and evaluate humanitarian and emergency assistance programmes.
- Manages the production of appeals for international assistance.
- Assists in the production of appeals for international assistance.
- Establishes and maintains contacts with government officials, other UN agencies, non-governmental organizations, diplomatic missions, media, etc.
- Undertakes and provides support to technical assistance and other field missions.
- Leads and contributes to the drafting and consolidation of key humanitarian reporting products.
- Serves as the primary focal point on specific topics or policy-related issues.
- Reviews and provides advice on policy issues related to safeguarding humanitarian principles and ensuring the effective delivery of humanitarian assistance.
- Organizes and participates in work groups, meetings, conferences, consultations with other agencies and partners.
- Provides guidance to, and may supervise, new/junior staff.
- Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods.
- Performs other duties as required.
Required Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or other related area is required. Humanitarian experience in the field (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is required. A minimum of two (2) of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable. Experience in developing, analyzing and reviewing reports for senior management is desirable. Experience with crisis communications and social media is desirable. Experience in humanitarian coordination mechanisms (cluster mechanism) is desirable. Relevant experience in a humanitarian context within the UN Common System or other comparable international organization is desirable.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, public administration, international studies, economics, strategic communications or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is an advantage.
