Overview

The Security Information Analyst is responsible for managing information relevant to security to enhance security risk management decision making. The role involves maintaining security information awareness and advising on threats affecting the United Nations.


Key Responsibilities
  • Management of information relevant to security, including collection, collation, analysis and dissemination.
  • Maintain security information awareness of all aspects which could potentially affect the safety and security of the UN.
  • Advises the PSA/CSIOC or equivalent on threats affecting the United Nations.
  • Supervises the Security Information and Operations Centre or similar entity, as appointed.
  • Identifies and coordinates security information requirements, collection, collation and dissemination of security threat information.
  • Analyzes security information, identifies trends of threats and security incidents affecting United Nations system personnel, assets and operations.
  • Develops trend analysis, gathers comprehensive information on all factors of insecurity, determines the relevance and validity of security information and the reliability of information resources.
  • Assists the PSA or CSIOC in the development of specific security risk assessments.
  • Develops corresponding security advisories and recommendations on security operating procedures.
  • Develops country-wide security risk analyses, briefing materials and presentations.
  • Conducts and coordinates research on specific threat factors, support activities of the Crisis Management Team.
  • Establishes effective communication channels with security authorities of host countries and other interlocutors.
  • Ensures timely dissemination of security threat information to mission leadership, Security Personnel.
  • Develops reports on analyses of security incidents.
  • Develops regional threat assessments.
  • Supervises the activities of the Security Information Analysts (if available) in the SIOC as well as any national staff assigned to the information cell, as assigned.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods.
Required Experience

A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in international relations, disarmament affairs, conflict resolution, crime or terrorism prevention, security, risk or disaster or emergency management and preparedness in the public or private sector areas responsible for responding to emergency situations that directly impact security is required. Experience in producing talking points, briefing papers and presentations for use by senior-level officials in international organizations or member states, to support decision-making, strategy development, and implementation is required. Experience in strategy development and planning support to United Nations Common System, International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO), or national governmental humanitarian response occurring in a conflict or post conflict environment is required. Experience working in collaborative teams conducting research and analysis addressing multi-dimensional strategic, operational and tactical issues pertaining to humanitarian operations occurring in conflict or post-conflict context, and their political/social context is required. Experience engaging with analytical networks and recognized sources of analytical expertise on global security matters is required. Experience in developing analytic products supporting humanitarian activities in conflict or post-conflict contexts in the Middle East is desirable. Experience in design and planning of risk mitigation strategies for humanitarian operations impacted by insecurity is desirable. Experience in using applied analytics or information management to advance decisions, strategies and execution is desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in business or public administration, political/social science, psychology, criminal justice, law, international relations, security management or a related field is required. A relevant first-level university degree in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A first-level university degree may be substituted with a diploma from a police or military education institution, college or academy obtained over a minimum of a three-year period.
