Overview
The Senior Mediation Adviser provides specialized technical and process expertise to support mediation and peace processes. The role involves advising UN officials, political and peacekeeping missions, country teams, and regional organizations.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide technical expertise and advice on the design and conduct of mediation, facilitation, and dialogue processes.
- Offer process expertise for the design, planning, and management of pre-negotiation, negotiation, and implementation frameworks.
- Participate in mediation talks and contribute to drafting peace agreements.
- Conceive, plan, and manage capacity-building seminars.
- Prepare periodic reports and thematic briefings.
- Ensure all activities and written products are gender mainstreamed and youth-sensitive.
Required Experience
- Progressively responsible experience in directly leading, designing, and/or supporting mediation, negotiations, facilitation, dialogue (design) issues in conflict, post-conflict, or prevention settings.
- Experience in mediation advice to chief mediators, senior envoys, and/or conflict parties.
- Experience in academia (research and/or teaching) and/or related fields.
- A significant part of the ten years of professional experience overall should be in one or more of the thematic areas: Design and Conduct of Mediation, Facilitation and Dialogue Processes; Security Arrangements (emphasis on ceasefires); Constitutional Issues; Power-sharing; Gender and Inclusion; Climate Change, Environment and Natural Resources; Transitional Justice and Reconciliation; Digital Technology, Mediation, and Inclusion.
- Significant and prolonged field experience in conflict, post-conflict, or other transitional situations is desirable.
- Experience in delivering mediation capacity-building or training activities is an asset.
- Significant experience in engaging with civil society in peace processes is an asset.
Qualifications
- An Advanced University Degree (Master’s Degree or equivalent), with ten (10) years of relevant experience is required.
- Or A First Level University Degree (Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent) with twelve (12) years of relevant experience may be accepted.
- A technical degree or military degree with fourteen (14) years of experience is accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
