Overview
The Migration Health Officer will be responsible for the management of the Migration Health Assessment Centre (MHAC) in Pretoria, South Africa, organizing and supervising the health assessment process for refugees and migrants.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize and supervise MHAC’s migration health assessment process.
- Conduct health assessments for refugees and migrants.
- Maintain MHAC premises infrastructure and equipment.
- Coordinate with CMHO, human resources, and MHAC organizational structure needs.
- Contribute to the network of external human resources.
- Ensure CMHO is informed about MHAC’s health activities.
- Contribute to and maintain efficient, client-centered procedures.
- Establish a system enabling clients to provide feedback.
- Contribute to and maintain a system of quality improvement.
- Undertake quality control activities.
- Use data analysis and a web reporting system to monitor performance indicators.
- Ensure implementation of global IOM SOPs and create CITY MHAC-specific SOPs.
- Ensure proper reporting and management of incidents.
- Collaborate with CMHO to incorporate additional public health interventions.
- Supervise health- and non-health staff.
- Establish MHAC staff development strategy.
- Liaise with external service providers to negotiate agreements.
- Maintain confidentiality and security of migration health data.
- Organize systematic collection, processing, and analyses of migration health data.
- Provide periodic, as well as ad-hoc reporting to the CMHO.
- Oversee the financial aspects of the MHAC.
- Provide oversight and coordinate the procurement of medical equipment, vaccines, medications, and other medical supplies.
- Facilitate the integration of health assessment activities into overall migration-related programming.
- Advise IOM colleagues on the link between the Health Assessment Programme and other core MHD programme areas.
- Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the direct supervisor.
Required Experience
- Minimum of seven (7) years of relevant professional experience, of which at least three (3) years managerial responsibilities.
- University degree in Medicine with preferred specializations: internal medicine and its subspecialties, paediatrics, anaesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology.
- OR University degree in Medicine with preferred specializations plus Master’s Degree in Community or Public Health, Medical Specialization in Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine or other related fields with five (5) years of relevant professional experience of which at least three (3) years managerial responsibilities.
- Professional continuous clinical experience, preferably in a multidisciplinary hospital setting or at IOM/similar international clinic context.
- Experience in Migration Health Assessments.
- Demonstrated progressive experience in health programme management.
- Experience in project development, management, and report writing.
- Proven abilities to establish partnerships with government institutions, health institutions, and other partners.
- Knowledge of public health.
- Demonstrable knowledge of patient safety and infection prevention and control.
- Experience in migration health emergency response is an asset.
- Proven expertise or post-graduate diploma/ degree in clinical specialization in the fields of pediatrics, pulmonology, or emergency medicine is an advantage.
- Proven expertise or post-graduate diploma/ degree in clinical specialization in the fields of internal medicine is an advantage.
- Proven expertise and/or specialization in public health, health care administration, or healthcare management is an advantage.
Qualifications
- University degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution.
- OR University degree in Medicine from an accredited academic institution plus Master’s Degree in Community or Public Health, Medical Specialization in Infectious Diseases, Tropical Medicine or other related fields from an accredited academic institution.
