Overview
The Child Protection Officer will gather, select, and analyze information on child protection, monitor political developments affecting child protection mandates, and provide technical and substantive support for policy development and implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Gathers, selects and analyses information on child protection.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge of political issues affecting child protection mandates.
- Monitors national and regional political developments and advises field missions.
- Provides technical and substantive back up in implementing child protection mandates.
- Supports the development, review and roll-out of policies, guidelines and training materials.
- Maintains contacts with UN sectors, international organizations and governments on child protection coordination and policy matters.
- Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organizations, government and non-governmental organizations.
- Participates in fact-finding and other missions.
- Prepares various written outputs, including background papers, analysis, and reports.
Required Experience
- A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
- At least three years of experience working on the protection of children in situations of armed conflict and the Security Council Monitoring and Reporting Mechanism (MRM) is required.
- At least two years of field experience with UN peacekeeping operations, UN agencies or international organizations is required.
- At least two years of experience in liaising and/or advocating with Member States and/or experience in policy, guidance and/or training development is required.
Qualifications
An advanced university degree (Master’s or Doctorate degree, or equivalent) in political science, international relations, human rights, humanitarian law, law or related fields is required. A first-level degree (Bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in the specified fields of studies with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
