Overview
The Head of Project Unit is responsible for the effective and successful achievement of results by the Project Unit, impacting its development and performance, UNOPS' visibility, and its position as a partner in sustainable development.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and design project implementation, including programme strategy, workplan, and budget.
- Oversee project implementation, review progress, assess constraints, and take corrective action.
- Ensure projects adhere to UNOPS policies and standards, including financial, procurement, contract, and grant management.
- Draft high-quality reports, prepare written summaries, and research analytical documents.
- Take responsibility for financial decisions and exercise financial control.
- Ensure systematic integration of prevention of sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment (PSEAH) and GESI into project implementation.
- Build and strengthen strategic partnerships with stakeholders.
- Plan, recruit, manage, and develop a Project Unit workforce.
- Foster and role-model a safe and inclusive work environment.
- Uphold the highest standards of conduct and take decisive action to address behaviors that undermine inclusion, equity and psychological safety.
- Oversee, monitor, and direct measures to maintain the safety and security of UNOPS personnel and assets.
- Design, coordinate, and disseminate public information products and communication activities.
- Support stakeholder management, including relationships with national authorities, UN missions, and donors.
- Participate in UN mission/country team meetings.
- Keep UN Mission leadership/Resident Coordinator informed of UNOPS activities.
- Foster and strengthen strategic partnerships at all levels.
- Promote inclusive engagement with national authorities, communities, and stakeholders.
- Keep abreast of and incorporate best practices, approaches, and technology.
- Initiate and undertake lessons learned, and share them for future improvement.
Required Experience
- 10 years of relevant experience with an Advanced University Degree.
- 12 years of relevant experience with a First Level University Degree.
- 16 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma.
- A minimum of 4 years of leadership experience, including supervising teams, managing complex projects, and budgets is required.
- Experience in writing and reviewing reports is required.
- Experience in programme or project management in military, humanitarian, conflict, post-conflict, or development contexts.
- Experience working in a developing country is desired.
- Experience working in mine action is desired.
- Experience working in a peacekeeping context, or collaborating closely with security forces on capacity building is desired.
- Experience advancing workforce inclusion and iterating gender and PSEAH/safeguarding into project implementation and implementing partner oversight is desired.
Qualifications
• Advanced University Degree (master degree or equivalent) OR First Level University Degree (bachelor degree or equivalent) OR High School Diploma.
