Overview

The Economist Specialist provides policy and programme support on economic, development, and social issues, conducting research and producing analytical reports to inform decision-making and design of UNDP projects and programmes.


Key Responsibilities
  • Provide policy advice and support on economic and development issues to UNDP management, programmes, and projects.
  • Compile, analyze, and interpret economic and statistical data, conducting research and preparing reports.
  • Provide inputs to strategic documents such as Common Country Assessments (CCA), UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF), and Country Programme Documents (CPD).
  • Lead the drafting of the Country Programme Document and key sections of the ROAR.
  • Advise on possible areas for UNDP support and adjustment of ongoing programmes.
  • Produce and launch economic reports, including National Human Development Reports.
  • Represent UNDP in different working groups.
  • Provide policy options to governments and other development actors from pro-poor and sustainability perspectives.
  • Contribute to knowledge networks and communities of practice.
  • Assess the country’s economic policies and strategies in their impact on poverty reduction, and inclusive and sustainable growth.
  • Provide training and capacity building support on economic issues.
  • Develop partnerships with UN Agencies, IFIs, government institutions, private sector, civil society, and development partners.
  • Research and analyze information on donors and prepare briefs on possible areas of cooperation.
  • Produce periodic updates and briefs on country development situation.
  • Undertake selected studies/research on emerging development concerns.
  • Contribute to policy advocacy for Human Development and inclusive sustainable economic growth.
  • Support monitoring progress and formulation of strategies towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Produce research papers for UNDP presentations at national and international workshops and conferences.
  • Produce blogs, op-eds, articles on development issues and UNDP Programmes and projects activities.
  • Manage events and publications on economic issues and act as UNDP focal point to the UNCT economists group.
  • Perform other duties as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.
Required Experience

Minimum of 5 years (with master’s degree) or 7 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant experience at the national or international level that includes extensive experience in research and policy-level analysis, and some experience in design, monitoring and evaluation of development projects.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in Economics or relevant related field is required. A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the above fields in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
