Overview
The Assistant Human Rights Officer will research and collect information on human rights issues, draft reports, and support the implementation of human rights activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to researching and collecting information pertaining to human rights issues/problem areas, emerging and evolving trends of human rights concerns and violations as well as response and capacity gaps, including their gender dimensions from a variety of data sources to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information; assists in the analysis of information, to include the impact on the countries and thematic mandates on the human rights situation in assigned area.
- Assist to drafting a variety of reports and correspondence, such as briefing, interviews notes, analytical documents relating to human rights matters.
- Assists in hearings and consultations; helps prepare summaries of discussions and outcomes.
- Maintains awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal developments in the country(ies) concerned.
- Supports the implementation of activities in compliance with relevant standards and methods of work, including for protection and safe handling of information.
- Collects and compiles information on human rights issues, including gender aspects, and contributes to discussions led by more senior Human Rights Officers.
- Assists in promoting efforts for community mobilisation and those that focus on exercise of rights of population.
- Assists in advocacy efforts, including scheduling and documenting meetings with authorities and other actors engaged in human rights work.
- Supports coordination with government, NGOs, and UN partners, particularly in gathering and maintaining baseline data with a focus on vulnerable groups.
- Maintains and updates basic project tracking tools, such as spreadsheets or shared databases, under guidance.
- Contributes to the collection and analysis of data as well as identification of trends or patterns and provides draft insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods for data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience
A minimum of two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law or related area is required. No experience is requested with an advanced university degree. Experience conducting face to face and/or remote interviews with victims and witnesses of human rights violations is desirable. Experience within the United Nations common system or similar international organization is desirable.
Qualifications
Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, social sciences, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in combination with two additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
