Overview

Internship with the Special Procedures Branch of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Supports the Branch's mandate to report and advise on human rights from a thematic perspective.

Tasks Summary

• Contribute to thematic reports or studies
• Research related literature, international law and jurisprudence
• Assist in the preparation of official country visits
• Draft country-specific human rights assessments
• Analyze human rights issues in cases and complaints
• Draft letters on cases and complaints
• Collect information and conduct research for briefing notes, statements and other documents
• Take notes of meetings with stakeholders
• Attend sessions of the Human Rights Council
• Assist with preparation of related activities and events
• Assist in the organization of meetings and seminars
• Perform other related duties as requested.

Experience Requirements

Applicants are not required to have professional work experience.

Qualification Requirements

• Graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's degree or equivalent)
• OR graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor's degree or equivalent)
• Preferably in law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field.

Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in English or French.

Languages Preferred: Knowledge of the other working language (English or French) is an asset. Knowledge of another United Nations official language (Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish) would be an advantage.

Contract Duration: Initial period of three (3) months, renewable for a combined period of six (6) months.
