Overview

The Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs and Security Policy leads the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division, advising on political aspects of NATO's core tasks and policy development for NATO's partnerships.

Tasks Summary
  • Lead and manage the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division.
  • Advise on the political aspects of NATO's core tasks.
  • Develop policy for NATO's partnerships.
  • Build relationships with partners in Eastern and South Eastern Europe, international organisations, Partnership for Peace countries, Mediterranean Dialogue and Istanbul Cooperation Initiative partners, and global partners.
  • Oversee NATO's Open Door Policy, policy with regard to Russia, and Arms Control, disarmament, and non-proliferation policy.
  • Lead and oversee work on Women, Peace and Security and Human Security.
  • Chair and co-chair high-level committees.
  • Represent the Secretary General at high-level meetings and speak in public fora.
  • Develop, communicate and implement a vision for the Alliance's future challenges.
  • Lead and oversee a large team of international staff, promoting integrity, professionalism and accountability.
  • Provide mentoring, coaching and training opportunities.
  • Ensure clarity on organisational and divisional objectives.
  • Provide regular and fair feedback on performance.
  • Participate in divisional performance reviews and identify high potentials.
  • Make contract renewal or conversion recommendations.
  • Serve on internal strategy, policy, and coordination boards.
  • Contribute to the improvement of organisational policies and processes.
  • Participate in leadership learning and development programmes.
Experience Requirements
  • At least 15 years of experience in political affairs, international relations and security policy.
  • Significant people management experience (10 years+).
  • Experience working in a multilateral environment or an environment with a variety of stakeholders from multi-cultural backgrounds.
  • Proven track record of recent experience in progressively senior-level leadership positions.
  • Experience facilitating high-level dialogue and consensus.
  • Proven track record of successfully developing key relationships with NATO partner countries.
  • Proven track record of creating a high-level vision and directing organisations to develop and implement policies.
Qualification Requirements

• A university degree or equivalent level of qualification in a field relevant for this position.

Other Details

Languages Required: • VI (“Proficiency”) in one of NATO’s official languages (English/French). • I (“Beginner”) in the other of NATO’s official languages (English/French).

Languages Preferred: • A higher level of proficiency in NATO’s other official language (English/French).

Contract Duration: • An initial period of 3 years. • Exceptionally, there may be possibility of a one-year extension thereafter.
