Overview

This competitive examination seeks to identify candidates for German Translator positions at the P-2 and P-3 levels within the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management.

Tasks Summary

• Translating documents covering a broad range of subjects dealt with by the United Nations, including political, social, legal, economic, financial, administrative, scientific, and technical fields.
• Translating a general text in English into German.
• Translating a specialized text in English (on an economic, legal, or international relations subject) into German.
• Completing a post-editing exercise.
• Translating a text in French or Spanish, or a specialized text in English, into German.

Experience Requirements

No experience is required but relevant work experience may be taken into consideration. Two or more years of practical experience in translation or a related field is desirable.

Qualification Requirements

Applicants must hold at least a first-level degree or an equivalent qualification in translation, interpretation, modern languages or another relevant subject, such as law, economics or international relations, from a university or institution of equivalent status at which German is the principal language of instruction, or hold at least a first-level university degree from a recognized school of translation. Completion of an advanced degree (Master’s or postgraduate diploma) or PhD in translation, interpretation, modern languages or another relevant subject is preferred.
