Overview

This internship position is located within the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Division on International Trade and Commodities (DITC), Trade, Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development Branch. The programme aims to enhance educational experience and gain experience in the work of the Organization.


Tasks Summary
  • Assist in preparing briefing notes, inputs to speeches, PowerPoint presentations, flyers and other communication material on oceans economy, trade, fisheries and aquaculture, coastal and marine tourism and climate change.
  • Assist in preparing inputs for analytical studies and research related to oceans/blue economy, trade, fisheries and aquaculture, seabed mining, coastal and marine tourism and climate change, particularly in SIDS.
  • Assist in preparing short news items and articles on relevant projects and activities by the Oceans Economy and Fisheries Programme.
  • Assist in providing quick policy, economic and legal analysis and advice on the interphase between, trade, the ocean economy and circular economy and environmental sustainability.
  • Support preparations for UNCTAD Sustainble Ocean and Blue Economy Programme events and trainings, including SDG14-related sessions and stakeholder coordination.
  • Follows UN oceans-related intergovernmental and other meetings and prepares minutes, summary reports, list of participants, evaluation forms and similar material.
  • Assists in the organization and servicing of online trainings, seminars, panels, etc.
  • Assist in preparing news items and social media posts on ocean-related matters.
  • Help translate complex technical and policy content into accessible language for diverse stakeholder groups.
  • Assist in compiling and analyses regulatory trends, trade and environmental data and other information necessary for the preparation of technical cooperation project proposals, reports and fundraising activities.
  • Assist in participating in the development and supports the delivery of training and related materials on trade and environment, oceans economy, trade, fisheries and aquaculture, seabed mining and climate change.

No working experience is required for this internship.


Qualification Requirements
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or,
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent).
  • Should be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • University degree must be in the area of communications, journalism, economics, development, law, political science or other social sciences deemed appropriate.
  • Studies in the fields of economics, environmental studies, international relations, international organizations, or political sciences are required.
Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required for the internship.

Languages Preferred: Knowledge of French, Spanish, Chinese or another UN language is an advantage.

Contract Duration: six months

Work Modality: remote or an in-person basis

Remuneration: The Internship Programme is unpaid and full-time, i.e., an intern is expected to work five days per week (40 hours). All costs of travel, accommodation, medical insurance and living expenses must be covered by the intern.
