Humanitarian Affairs Intern

Overview

The Humanitarian Affairs Intern will support the Humanitarian Programme Cycle Section (HPCS) with tasks related to humanitarian planning, data analysis, and reporting for various UN initiatives.

Tasks Summary

• Assist with the coordination, consolidation, and quality review of humanitarian planning products.
• Support data and narrative structuring, consistency checks, and documentation.
• Update guidance and training materials.
• Provide help-desk support during planning processes.
• Support technical meetings related to humanitarian planning.
• Provide support to country teams digitalizing their humanitarian needs and response plans.
• Assist with data structuring, entry, consistency and analysis.
• Update training material and provide training to country teams.
• Contribute to the Global Humanitarian Overview 2026 by reviewing and synthesizing data and trends.
• Support the identification of global drivers of need, key humanitarian needs, response gaps and funding trends.
• Develop tools and processes to lighten the Global Humanitarian Overview in view of the constrained funding environment.
• Assist in drafting content and preparing visualizations for the Global Humanitarian Overview.
• Coordinate inputs from country and regional offices to inform regular updates to the Global Humanitarian Overview.
• Support country offices, the design and preparation of studies on humanitarian response and emergency relief.
• Conduct research and analysis on assigned topics.
• Contribute to written materials such as background papers, policy briefs, and reports.
• Help maintain reference materials.
• Assist in organizing meetings, workshops, and conferences.
• Take notes during meetings, workshops, and conferences.

Experience Requirements

• Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience.
• A field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are applying for is required.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is required.
• Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Datawrapper) is desirable.
• Experience with data structuring, digital platforms, or user support is desirable.
• Understanding of design principles, e.g., using visuals to convey a message is desirable.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks independently is desirable.

Qualification Requirements

• Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
• Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent), preferably in areas related to political science, social science, humanitarian affairs, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or in a related field.

Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in English and French (both oral and written) is required.

Languages Preferred: Knowledge of Spanish is an asset.

Contract Duration: Maximum period of six (6) months.

Work Modality: In person, remotely, or in a hybrid format, with the modality adjustable based on the request of the successful candidate. Preferably full-time, based in person in Geneva (Switzerland), though remote or hybrid arrangements may also be explored.

Remuneration: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
