Overview

The Senior Fishery Officer (Aquaculture Technology) role focuses on leading and implementing policies and programmes to maximize the positive impacts of aquaculture on economic, social, and environmental objectives, contributing to food security and nutrition.

Tasks Summary
  • Plans, manages or leads specialized or multi-disciplinary teams.
  • Analyses global and country-specific requirements and technical issues.
  • Implements and monitors programmes of work.
  • Conducts, designs and oversees research and analysis activities.
  • Provides technical and policy advice to Members and decentralized offices.
  • Leads and/or collaborates in capacity development and knowledge sharing activities.
  • Represents the Organization at international meetings and conferences.
  • Leads and/or participates in resource mobilization activities.
  • Develops and leads a programme of work on marine, brackish and freshwater aquaculture.
  • Leads the implementation of the Blue Transformation Roadmap.
  • Leads aquaculture technology innovations, digitalization, and smart technologies.
  • Leads the implementation of the ecosystem approach to aquaculture.
  • Leads the development of the multidisciplinary programme on aquaculture and associated knowledge products.
  • Contributes to cross-cutting initiatives on SDGs, climate change, biodiversity, food security and nutrition.
  • Secures extra-budgetary funds.
Experience Requirements
  • Ten years of relevant experience in aquaculture research, aquaculture extension and development, aquatic environmental research and/or management, aquaculture economics or related field.
  • Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions, is essential.
  • Extent and relevance of experience or knowledge of and in provision of scientific support and advice to national, regional and international aquaculture network in both developed and developing countries.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in planning and implementation of research and/or development programmes in aquaculture or aquatic ecosystem management.
  • Demonstrated results-based management capabilities.
  • Depth of knowledge of current global issues, trends, constraints, and research needs related to sustainable aquaculture governance, policy, science and innovation.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in different countries and regions, especially in developing countries and countries in transition.
  • Ability to mobilize resources.
  • Extent and relevance of experience in organizing international meetings, seminars and training courses.
Qualification Requirements

• Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in biology, aquaculture, aquatic sciences, environmental sciences, fisheries/ aquaculture economics or related discipline.

Other Details

Languages Required: • Working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English and intermediate knowledge (intermediate proficiency - level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish).

Contract Duration: Fixed-term: two years with possibility of extension
