Overview

The Regional Preparedness Officer coordinates and supports the implementation of institutional policy in Country Offices across the Region, providing expertise on Disaster Risk Reduction, preparedness, early warnings, and anticipatory action.

Tasks Summary
  • Facilitate the review, endorsement, and monitoring of project proposals.
  • Coordinate capacity building of Country Offices through training.
  • Participate in governmental and inter-agency meetings.
  • Support Country Offices to develop and enhance DRR and preparedness actions.
  • Coordinate knowledge management efforts.
  • Maintain coordination with relevant HQ Departments and Global Offices.
  • Monitor and assess DRR and Preparedness-related contextual developments.
  • Provide technical and thematic expertise to Country Offices.
  • Facilitate coordination, prioritization and operational planning.
  • Coordinate and support the development of regional programmes and projects.
  • Coordinate resource mobilization in the Region.
  • Coordinate the development of regional thematic guidance notes.
  • Coordinate the development and maintenance of partnerships.
  • Promote the use of a data-driven and evidence-based approach to IOM programming.
  • Undertake travel to Country Offices to advise and guide development and implementation of activities.
  • Oversee and support the integration of cross-cutting priorities in Country Office programming.
  • Ensure the continued functioning of the RO Humanitarian Response and Recovery Unit in the absence of the Regional Thematic Specialist.
Experience Requirements
  • At least five years of relevant professional experience with a Master’s degree; or at least seven years of relevant professional experience with a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Demonstrated experience in preparedness anticipatory action and related areas relevant to project development and management, thematic capacity building, and liaison.
  • Experience working in non-OECD countries managing preparedness projects.
  • Experience in liaison, resource mobilization, and advocacy with governmental and diplomatic officials, national and international institutions and organizations, civil society, and private sector actors.
  • Experience working in an international, inter-governmental, or non-governmental organization, United Nations, or government.
  • Experience in the design and implementation of capacity building on preparedness.
Qualification Requirements
  • Master’s degree in International Relations, Disaster Risk Management, Engineering, Political Science, Social Science, or a related field from an accredited academic institution; or,
  • Bachelor’s degree in the above fields.
Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in English and Spanish is required (oral and written).

Languages Preferred: Working knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, and Russian) and/or Portuguese is an advantage.
