Overview
The Political Affairs Officer will gather, select, and analyze information related to counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism. The role involves maintaining knowledge reviews, assisting in the development of information analysis and knowledge management for UNOCT, and preparing analytical documents.
Tasks Summary
- Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press and emerging peace and security trends, in particular related to counter-terrorism and the prevention of violent extremism when conducive to terrorism.
- Maintains up-to-date knowledge reviews and analyzes key policy and strategic of developments relating to thematic issues and trends in international peace and security, countering and preventing terrorism and violent extremism for which the staff member is responsible.
- Assists in the development of work on information analysis and knowledge management for UNOCT, including the development of knowledge management products, or maintaining knowledge management repositories and databases.
- Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues being considered.
- Prepares and/or contributes to analytical and background documents and reports, including notes and talking points, in support of senior officials and colleagues, as required.
- Provides technical and substantive back up, as well as administrative, logistic and planning support in the implementation of mandates of PKMCB .
- Maintains and Develops collaborative relationships with contacts and coordinates with other sectors of stakeholders and partners in the UN, other international organizations and governments, as appropriate, on relevant policy matters.
- Monitors actions taken and reports by intergovernmental bodies, UN entities, and government and non-governmental organizations.
- Selects, classifies and stores in computerised databases information relating to potential disputes and conflicts involving assigned countries or region.
- Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries within assigned area of responsibility.
- Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
- Prepares meetings of the SG/DSG/USG with officials from countries under the Organization's purview.
- Performs other related duties as required.
Experience Requirements
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, counter-terrorism, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience in policy development and implementation in the United Nations system, including coordination with multiple stakeholders, is required. Experience in the field of counter-terrorism and prevention of violent extremism is required. Experience in knowledge management, development of knowledge products or information analysis is required. Experience in the preparation of Secretary-General reports and support of inter-governmental processes is required. Experience drafting reports, analytical products and talking points in support of senior officials is desirable. Experience in the development of databases and repositories, as well as in big data analysis is desirable.
Qualification Requirements
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, law, public administration or related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
