Human Rights Intern

Overview

This internship provides exposure to the work of the United Nations by serving within Secretariat entities, specifically the Indigenous Peoples and Minorities Section.

Experience Requirements

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Secretariat Internship Programme.

Qualification Requirements

• Graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's degree or equivalent, or higher).
• Graduate or enrolled in the final academic year of a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor's degree or equivalent).
• Preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field.
• Excellent communication and drafting skills.
• Strong analytical and research skills.
• Knowledge of human rights principles and international human rights mechanisms.
• Good understanding of the human rights issues faced by Indigenous Peoples and/or persons belonging to national or ethnic, religious and linguistic minorities is required.
• Exposure to addressing discrimination, including its intersectional aspects, is desirable.

Other Details

Languages Required: • Fluency in English is required (both oral and written).

Languages Preferred: • Knowledge of French is an asset. • Knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage (i.e. Arabic, Chinese, Russian or Spanish). • Knowledge of a minority or indigenous language would also be an advantage.

Contract Duration: 3-6 months

Work Modality: In-person / hybrid

Remuneration: Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
