Overview
The Local Security Assistant assists in providing support in the implementation of security and safety management in the country of assignment, protecting and minimizing risks to UN personnel, property, and operations to enable effective UN programme delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide support to security risk management for UN Security Management Systems (SMS) and UN Programmes.
- Gather and organize information on security factors relevant to UN programmes.
- Assist in conducting security assessments and gathering information on threats.
- Assist in implementing person-centered security risk management approaches.
- Gather inputs for country security documents.
- Help in preparing and updating security aspects of emergency procedures.
- Coordinate with HR Units to ensure staff lists are up-to-date.
- Provide support in organizing security awareness training and briefings.
- Monitor UN staff security training compliance.
- Liaise with agencies administration for procurement of security equipment and supplies.
- Assist in monitoring and assessing security compliance of UN premises and international staff residences.
- Maintain liaison with commercial security companies.
- Gather information for Country Office security reports.
- Respond to and assist in reporting safety and security incidents.
- Maintain a database on agencies security contact details and Focal points.
Required Experience
- Minimum of 5 years (with secondary education) or 2 years (with bachelor’s degree) of relevant progressively responsible experience in security, preferably in the military or police context or related field of work.
- Prior experience with the UN system or an international NGO is desirable.
- Experience in the use of computers, office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc), database packages, and web-based management systems such as ERP is required.
- Experience in Safety and security risk management (threat assessment, mitigation).
- Security information management (analysis and recommendations).
- Security advice, planning, and coordination.
- Experience in the use of radio communications systems such as VHR radio Operations and knowledge of Country security codes is desirable.
Qualifications
- Secondary Education is required.
- University degree (bachelor’s degree) in Political Science, Military Studies, Security Management, Management or a relevant field will be given due consideration, but it is not a requirement.
- Applicable security, police and/or military training is desirable.
