Overview

The Political Affairs Officer will support the implementation of activities for the Africa Amnesty Month of the African Union Silencing the Guns Initiative. The role involves gathering, analyzing, and reporting on political developments and disarmament issues.


Key Responsibilities
  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues and disarmament.
  • Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice.
  • Provides technical and substantive support in the implementation of mandates and projects.
  • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of project activities.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments.
  • Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organisations, government and nongovernmental organizations.
  • Provides substantive support to meetings, workshops, events, and promotes policy through outreach activities.
  • Prepares reports and provides inputs to relevant publications and makes presentations.
  • Participates in fact-finding and other missions to countries.
  • Participates in provision of secretariat services to Security Council, General Assembly, subsidiary organizations, negotiating bodies, conferences, meetings, and /or special missions.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights using data visualization methods.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience
  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, project or progamme management, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in the field of disarmament, conventional arms control, or the women peace and security agenda is required.
  • Experience in research, programing or implementation of projects to reduce illicit flows of small arms, light weapons and ammunition or related area is required.
  • Experience coordinating with regional and sub-regional organizations in Africa for the implementation of projects and activities towards reducing illicit flows of small arms and light weapons and ammunition is desirable.
  • Experience with the African Union Silencing the Guns Initiative or related area is desirable.
  • 2 Years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.
Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related fields is required. A first-level university degree (Bachelor's degree or equivalent) in the specific fields of studies in combination with two additional years of relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
