BirdLife Malta Ta' Xbiex, Malta Volunteer opportunity: Nature Reserves Visitor Assistant
In this role, you will support the daily opening and smooth operation of BirdLife Malta’s nature reserves, ensuring visitors enjoy a welcoming and educational experience. Duties include opening reserves to the public (including afternoons, evenings and weekends), guiding visitors through the sites and the Salt Museum at Salina, and providing basic interpretation of the reserves’ natural and cultural value. You will help set up reception areas, displays, binoculars and the nature shop, as well as manage shop activities and encourage BirdLife Malta membership. The role also involves collecting visitor statistics, gathering feedback and supporting data entry. You will take part in events aimed at increasing environmental awareness, lead guided walks, and assist with ongoing research activities. When reserves are closed to the public, you will support habitat management and maintenance work, contributing to site improvement and ecological monitoring activities. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you with accommodation in the northern part of the island close to our nature reserves, coverage of utilities such as electricity, water, gas, and internet, reimbursement of the flight and other transport costs (bus, train, metro) to/from Malta, limited according to distance, €380 monthly allowance and private HEALTH insurance provided by Henner. Training during the activity Working under the Site Warden and Head of Land Management, the chosen applicant will receive training on site history, habitats, flora and fauna. Participant profile Applicants must be aged between 18 and 30 and be citizens of one of the programme or partner countries. The ideal candidate should be of friendly, enjoy meeting new people, keen to experience a different culture. They should be organised, able to meet deadlines and demonstrate a high standard of communication and people engagement skills. They should also be keen to learn about environmental education and how to engage people with nature, and willing to learn with an adaptable approach in line with the needs of a charitable organisation’s structure, including working flexible and occasional long hours.
