Overview
The Programme Policy Officer (Disaster Risk Modeling Analyst) will strengthen the early warning system for natural disasters and provide risk quantifications and early warning messages.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate field data collection for model verification.
- Analyze historical, geological, meteorological, and other relevant data.
- Combine, overlay, and display mathematical models and process risk quantifications.
- Analyze community, infrastructure, and ecosystem vulnerability.
- Ensure data integration from stakeholder APIs and troubleshoot data flow.
- Analyze hazard risk mapping and quantify asset exposure.
- Conduct model calibrations, provide risk probabilities, and generate early warning messages.
- Enhance system calibration and ensure accuracy of risk warning messages.
- Analyze model thresholds and outputs, and suggest calibration parameters.
- Organize calibration review meetings.
- Design and implement informative dashboards for strategic decision-making.
- Update dashboard features and explain system functionalities.
- Innovate and apply improvements to existing disaster models.
- Collaborate with modeling experts to improve or upgrade models.
- Investigate and assess potential risk factors.
- Generate system messages and analyze risk probabilities.
- Oversee early warning generation and dissemination.
- Model risk based on different datasets.
- Design and update the structure for warning message dissemination.
- Collect system information feedback.
- Coach, mentor, and provide ToT trainings for EWS functionalities.
- Maintain up-to-date risk exposure information and propose mitigation measures.
- Perform other related duties.
Required Experience
- 3 years of extensive GIS skills and demonstrated work experience in data/numerical modeling.
- Experience in modeling for disaster risk management, meteorology, or environmental sciences will be highly valued.
- Advanced data analysis skills.
- Experience with predictive models is an added advantage.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for spatial data analysis and hazard risk mapping.
- Experience with geospatial technology including but not limited to ArcGIS, raster analysis or holding a GIS specialized Certification is highly advantageous.
- Experience with ArcGIS products is of advantage.
- Solid Python coding skills for model development, data analysis, and automation of processes.
- Experience with model thresholds, system analysis and data automation.
Qualifications
• A master’s degree in a relevant field in mathematical modeling, engineering physics, natural sciences including Geology and meteorology.
