Overview

Serve as the main focal point for the Conventional Arms pillar of UNRCPD’s Programme of Work and lead the implementation of specific projects related to small arms and light weapons and ammunition management.


Key Responsibilities
  • Serve as main focal point for Conventional Arms pillar of UNRCPD’s Programme of Work.
  • Lead the implementation of the Asia-Pacific component of UNODA’s Project on supporting the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UN PoA), and the Global Framework for Through-life Conventional Ammunition Management (GFA) as the main coordinator of the project.
  • Gathers, selects and analyses information contained in communications and publications received from different sources, including the press.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues, in general, and in particular as they affect the countries and thematic mandates for which the staff member is responsible.
  • Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in the area of assignment and provides inputs on issues to senior officials and colleagues in missions and elsewhere in the Secretariat.
  • Monitors national and regional level political developments and provides advice to field mission/UN agencies active on the ground.
  • Provides technical and substantive back up in the implementation of mandates of the office, branch or unit.
  • Maintains contacts with other sectors of the UN, other international organizations and governments on coordination and policy matters.
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends or patterns and provide insights through graphs, charts, tables and reports using data visualization methods to enable data-driven planning, decision-making, presentation and reporting.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Required Experience

A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political science, international relations, disarmament, security or related area is required. A minimum of two years of work experience in the field of small arms and light weapons control and/or ammunition management is required. Professional experience in Asia and the Pacific on strengthening States’ weapons and ammunition management and/or preventing illicit trafficking of arms and ammunition is required. Work experience with the United Nations or similar international organization is desirable. Two years or more of experience in data analytics or related area is desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations or other related area is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Successful completion of both degree and non-degree programs in data analytics, business analytics or data science programs is desirable.
