Overview
This internship focuses on enhancing participation and protecting civic space within the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR). The role supports initiatives related to Human Rights Defenders, strategic field engagement, monitoring civic space, and mainstreaming civic space within the UN system.
Key Responsibilities
- Support regional and in-country initiatives to protect Human Rights Defenders (HRDs).
- Support strategic field engagement on civic space.
- Monitor civic space and the situation of HRDs.
- Mainstream civic space and protection in the UN system.
- Build public support for civic space and HRDs.
- Strengthen good protection practices, including protection networks.
- Raise the visibility and increase support for the work of defenders and influence the narrative.
- Monitor civic space trends and situation of HRDs.
- Mainstream civic space in wider UN policies, practices and operational activities.
- Lead UN system-wide efforts to mitigate reprisals against those who cooperated with the UN system on human rights.
Required Experience
APPLICANTS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO HAVE PROFESSIONAL WORK EXPERIENCE FOR PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAMME.
Qualifications
- Recent graduate or enrolled in a graduate school programme (Master's degree or equivalent).
- Recent graduate or enrolled in a first-level university degree programme (Bachelor's degree or equivalent).
- Preferably in the area of law, political science, international relations, social sciences or a related field.
