Overview
The Finance Assistant performs financial and budget-related duties within the Finance and Budget Unit, ensuring compliance with UN Financial Regulations and Rules and IPSAS.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviews and processes financial transactions, including payments to staff, uniformed personnel, vendors, and partners.
- Performs end-to-end accounting in Umoja, recording, reviewing, and reconciling financial entries.
- Prepares daily, monthly, and year-end bank reconciliations.
- Supports year-end closure by preparing IPSAS-compliant financial statements and recording accruals.
- Ensures strong internal controls and supports audit requirements.
- Investigates erroneous accounting entries and reviews postings.
- Contributes to financial data analysis and reporting.
- Assists in preparing cost estimates and budget proposals.
- Supports Fund Center managers in resource justification and budget implementation.
- Processes redeployment of funds in Umoja and monitors budget utilization.
- Assists in preparing and reviewing budget performance reports.
- Reviews year-end budget commitments and assists in financial and operational performance monitoring.
- Prepares cost-recovery plans.
- Updates deliverables and results using the SMA tool.
- Drafts correspondence and prepares inputs for reports.
- Maintains up-to-date files and documentation.
- Performs other duties related to finance and budget as assigned.
Required Experience
A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in International Organizations in accounting, budgeting and financial management or related area is required. The minimum years of relevant experience is reduced to five (5) for candidates who possess a first-level university degree or higher. Experience in financial accounting, cost recovery, budget formulation, budget and financial monitoring, or audit is required. Experience in monitoring financial transactions, identifying and analyzing trends in line with IPSAS and IFRS is required.
Qualifications
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. A technical or vocational certificate in financial accounting or budgeting is required.
