Overview

Conducts legal research and assists in the preparation of legal documents, opinions, and agreements within international law and other areas of specialization.


Key Responsibilities
  • Conducts legal research on assigned issues in international law and other areas of specialization.
  • Assists in the review of legal documents, instruments, or other material.
  • Assists in the preparation of drafts of background papers, studies, and reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of legal opinions/advice on international public and private law issues.
  • Assists in the preparation of agreements and contracts.
  • Assists in representing the Organization before arbitral and other tribunals or administrative proceedings.
  • Assists in providing legal advice on human resources matters.
  • Assists in servicing diplomatic conferences, commissions, committees, task forces and other bodies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in international law, including legal analysis, research and writing or the successful completion of the Young Professionals Programme Examination (YPP)/United Nations National Competitive Recruitment Examination (NCRE) or the General Service to Professional Examination (G to P) is required. Experience working in the United Nations or another international organization is desirable.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law is required. A first-level university degree in law in combination with two additional years of relevant qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. Admittance to the practice of law in a Member State of the Organization or otherwise qualified to practice law is required.
