Overview
The Senior Legal Associate will support the Protection Unit in ensuring protection standards and operational procedures align with international standards. The role involves providing legal guidance to internal teams and partners, contributing to legal advice, position papers, and guidelines.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist the Protection Unit in ensuring protection standards, operational procedures, and practices are aligned with international standards.
- Support the Unit in implementing activities carried out in cooperation with partners.
- Provide legal guidance internally and to UNHCR’s partners.
- Support initiatives related to legislative aspects.
- Contribute to the preparation of legal advice, position papers, and guidelines.
- Monitor relevant legal developments at national and regional levels and provide recommendations.
- Conduct research and follow judicial developments at national and regional levels.
- Make briefings on legislative/judicial developments for briefing kits and internal papers.
- Support the preparation of legal materials shared with national counterparts.
- Prepare compilations of good practices and comparative charts.
- Report on developments.
- Provide assistance in UNHCR's legal publications, dissemination of legal information on refugee law, and UNHCR's legal website.
- Support activities in strengthening the national capacity of relevant actors through organizing capacity-building activities.
- Represent the Office externally on protection doctrine and policy as needed.
Required Experience
Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience in protection, asylum, migration management, or related areas.
Qualifications
Bachelor's or equivalent or higher in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field.
