Overview

The Political Affairs Officer (Conflict-related Sexual Violence) role involves gathering and analyzing information on conflict-related sexual violence, monitoring political developments, and providing substantive support for training and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

• Gathers, selects and analyses information pertaining to conflict-related sexual violence.
• Maintains up-to-date knowledge of events relating to political issues affecting Security Council Resolutions and DPO's mandates.
• Keeps abreast of latest trends and developments in conflict-related sexual violence.
• Monitors national and regional level political developments pertaining to conflict-related sexual violence.
• Provides technical and substantive back up in the development and roll-out of training and guidance.
• Prepares various written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, documenting lessons learned and best practices.
• Maintains contacts with UN partners, other international organizations and governments.
• Monitors actions taken by intergovernmental groups, UN organization's, government and nongovernmental organizations.
• Participates in evaluations and other technical support missions.

Required Experience

A minimum of five years of experience in political science, international relations, law, disarmament, security, development management, conflict resolution or related area is required. Experience leading or coordinating activities to prevent and respond to conflict-related sexual violence for at least two years is required. Field experience with UN peacekeeping or political missions; agencies funds and programmes; and international organizations is desirable. Experience with development and roll-out of training and guidance on conflict-related sexual violence is required. Minimum two years of experience working at the international level in one of the following area: women, peace and security and/or conflict-related sexual violence is required.

Qualifications

Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, international relations, international economics, law, public administration or other related. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
