Overview

Legal Officer responsible for conducting legal research and analysis on international investment agreements for sustainable development. Prepares studies, reports, and policy recommendations.


Tasks Summary
  • Conducts legal research and analysis on national and international legal frameworks related to foreign direct investment (FDI) for sustainable development
  • Reviews legal documents, instruments, and materials to identify key issues
  • Prepares drafts of background papers, studies, reports, and legislative texts on international investment agreements
  • Provides technical and analytical input to UNCTAD publications
  • Prepares guiding principles and policy recommendations on investment policymaking
  • Services diplomatic conferences and other bodies
  • Administers legal technical assistance programs
  • Organizes and lectures at international investment law seminars
  • Provides guidance to junior staff
  • Collects and analyzes data to identify trends and provide insights
  • Performs other assigned duties

Experience Requirements
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in law, including legal analysis, research, and writing
  • Two years of experience in international investment data analytics is desirable
  • Analytical experience on the interplay between international investment agreements and taxation, the energy transition or health is desirable
  • Experience in technical assistance or other capacity building activities in international investment agreements is desirable

Qualification Requirements
  • Advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in international law or related area is required
  • A first-level university degree in the above-mentioned fields in combination with two additional years of qualifying experience may be accepted

Languages Required: English

Languages Preferred: French or Chinese (Mandarin) or Spanish or Arabic or Russian

Contract Duration: Initially available for one year. Extensions beyond one year are subject to availability of funding, satisfactory performance and continuing need of the functions.
