Tasks Summary
- The project empowers disadvantaged girls and women in slum community by providing training in sewing, tailoring, brand building, and financial literacy, equipping them with income-generating skills. It enhances access to comprehensive social and economic services while addressing the root causes of vulnerability, such as poverty, lack of awareness, and limited skills, to promote self-sufficiency. As a volunteer, you will support and engage in the following activities: 1) Empowering young people by teaching fashion design and knitting skills, 2) Developing new products based on local market demand, 3) Marketing youth center products locally and internationally, 4) Organizing exhibitions and exposure tours/visits, 5) Providing basic financial literacy training, 6) Developing a quality control system, 7) Strengthening relationships with existing partners and identifying new partnership opportunities. Accommodation, food and transport arrangements Accommodation will be provided in a shared apartment with other volunteers, each having a private, lockable bedroom, located in the suburbs of Kampala. The volunteer will receive monthly allowance that will cover food, communication costs, and local transportation. The volunteer will travel daily to the project site. Public transport mainly consists of commuter taxis (Matatus), while shorter distances are typically covered using motorbikes known as Boda Bodas. Training during the activity The volunteer will participate in an online pre-departure training, followed by an in-person induction upon arrival at the host organization. Additionally, the volunteer will be encouraged and provided with financial support to learn the local language. Participant profile Passion for working with girls and women from diverse backgrounds
- Qualifications in textile fashion design, tailoring, or knitting
- Ability to work independently
- Experience in teaching and instructing textile-related work
- Willingness to work in slum or vulnerable communities
- Open-minded and emotionally resilient, with the ability to adapt to the local environment
- Flexible and creative mindset
- Basic computer skills for communication, design, and marketing
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
