Overview

The Associate Legal Officer provides analytical work and legal advice to support the Office of Legal Affairs in achieving its mandate. The role focuses on ensuring UNIDO's activities and programmes comply with its legal framework and managing legal risks.

Tasks Summary
  • Conduct research on legal matters related to UNIDO's activities and operations.
  • Research the interpretation and application of UNIDO's legal instruments.
  • Assist in preparing expert legal opinions, legal advice, and correspondence.
  • Assist in preparing legal briefs for the ILO Administrative Tribunal.
  • Assist in providing advice on cases, claims, and legal proceedings involving UNIDO.
  • Assist in reviewing and commenting on draft administrative issuances and documents.
  • Assist in the periodic review of administrative issuances.
  • Assist in covering meetings of policymaking organs and preparing legal advice.
  • Represent the Office at internal meetings and on Secretariat committees.
  • Conduct research and prepare replies to questions of law and practice from other UN agencies.
  • Conduct peer reviews of draft legal opinions and advice.
  • Support the maintenance and implementation of the Office’s knowledge management system.
Experience Requirements
  • A minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in law, including legal research, drafting or analysis obtained in a legal office is required.
  • Experience gained through an entry-level or associate legal role in an international organization, government legal office, court, or law firm is required.
  • Exposure to litigation or dispute‑resolution processes is desirable.
  • Experience assisting in the provision of legal advice, preferably in the legal office of a UN Common System entity or another international organization, is desirable.
Qualification Requirements

An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in Law, preferably in International Law or another field of law directly relevant to the work of the Office, is required. Admission to the Bar in at least one national jurisdiction is desirable.

Other Details

Languages Required: Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Languages Preferred: Fluency in or working knowledge of French or another official language(s) of the United Nations, is desirable.

Remuneration: Indicative Minimum Net Annual Salary: 85,806 USD
