Overview
Conduct a market assessment of nano and micro-SMEs in Marsabit County, Kenya, to identify barriers and enablers to market functionality during crises and propose anticipatory support mechanisms.
Tasks Summary
- Review existing market and humanitarian assessments for Marsabit.
- Work with SND to review mapped multi sectoral NMSME’s that provide key support during emergencies selecting at least 50 NMSEs to focus the study on.
- Collect baseline information on the NMSEs to support the development of SME baseline profiles.
- Profile NMSEs e.g. financial access, liquidity, and business continuity planning.
- Assess barriers and enablers, vulnerabilities and resilience factors during crises.
- Identify feasible options for anticipatory support with clarity on what level this support should be applied (e.g. at business level, community level, meso level, county etc).
- Assess institutional arrangements required for delivery of support mechanisms.
- Work with the local partner to convene forums with relevant stakeholders (e.g. county officials, NGOs, SME associations, and financial institutions).
- Facilitate workshops to validate findings and co-develop activation-ready coordination protocols.
- Align proposed mechanisms with national/County early warning and forecast-based financing (FbF) systems.
Experience Requirements
- At least 7 years’ experience in market systems analysis (EMMA, PCMMA, VCA).
- At least four similar experiences carried out.
- Demonstrated expertise in SME/market assessments in ASAL counties.
- Strong knowledge of anticipatory action, financial inclusion, and resilience programming.
- Experience engaging with SMEs, humanitarian actors, and local government.
Qualification Requirements
• Advanced degree in Economics, Development Studies, Humanitarian Action, or related field.
