Overview

The UNV Laboratory Technician will provide laboratory testing services, including chemistry, electrolytes, serology, and bacteriology, to mission employees and other UN organizations.

Tasks Summary
  • Perform a full range of laboratory investigations (hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, serology, blood grouping, cross-matching, urinalysis, etc.).
  • Ensure accurate sample collection, labeling, processing, analysis, and documentation.
  • Provide timely and reliable results to Medical Officers/Clinicians.
  • Participate in emergency laboratory services.
  • Provide technical guidance for laboratory referrals.
  • Supervise and ensure compliance with protocols for emergency blood transfusions and cross-matching.
  • Support UNISFA blood management systems.
  • Ensure the safety, security, and proper functioning of laboratory facilities.
  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain complex laboratory equipment.
  • Monitor laboratory environmental conditions and ensure proper storage of reagents and specimens.
  • Maintain cold chain systems.
  • Monitor weekly consumption of laboratory reagents, consumables, and materials.
  • Prepare monthly supply forecasts and procurement requests.
  • Ensure efficient stock management.
  • Maintain complete, accurate, and confidential laboratory records.
  • Monitor and ensure proper completion of laboratory registration books and reporting systems.
  • Prepare monthly laboratory activity reports.
  • Manage Internal and External Quality Control (IQC/EQC) processes.
  • Ensure adherence to international laboratory quality standards and biosafety practices.
  • Conduct in-service training sessions for mission medical personnel.
  • Participate in mission-wide medical meetings and technical briefings.
  • Attend mandatory Lab Officer/Supervisor training and continuous professional development sessions.
  • Support evaluation processes related to laboratory performance and quality standards.
  • Work closely with Medical Officers, Nurses, Pharmacists, and other healthcare staff.
  • Liaise with external reference laboratories and Ghana Level 2+ Hospital.
  • Support mobile clinic operations and emergency deployments.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Chief Medical Officer(cmo).
Experience Requirements
  • 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with microscopy techniques for the identification of malaria parasites is required.
  • Prior experience in the laboratory diagnosis of malaria and other tropical diseases is considered desirable.
  • Broad experience performing core laboratory tests (hematology, biochemistry, microbiology, serology, urinalysis, blood grouping/cross matching).
  • Ability to support emergency and after hours lab services and ensure accurate sample handling and reporting.
  • Experience with blood transfusion procedures and cold chain management.
  • Ability to operate and maintain essential lab equipment and follow biosafety and quality control standards.
  • Experience with laboratory stock management and basic training of medical staff on SOPs and safety.
Qualification Requirements
  • Technical/vocational diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology. (Registered professional medical laboratory technician).
  • A degree in Medical Laboratory Technology will be considered as an advantage.

Languages Preferred: Arabic, Level: Working knowledge, Desirable

Contract Duration: 12 months (with possibility of extension)
