Overview

The Aviation Safety Assistant provides advice on aviation safety matters and supports the development and management of the Mission Aviation Safety Programme, including hazard and risk management, safety assurance, and emergency response planning.


Key Responsibilities
  • Participate and support in the development and implementation of the Mission Aviation Safety Programme (MASP).
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the Aviation Emergency Response Plan (AERP).
  • Support the coordination and organization of aviation safety drills and exercises.
  • Monitor and advise on the integration of Aviation Risk Management into UN aviation activities.
  • Support in conducting Safety Assurance activities.
  • Propose corrective and preventive measures and develop aviation safety recommendations.
  • Support during/or investigate aviation occurrences and hazards.
  • Attend state investigations of accidents and serious incidents involving UN air assets.
  • Identify, analyze and monitor trends affecting UN aviation safety.
  • Participate in initial and recurrent aircraft inspections and performance evaluations of air operators.
  • Conduct safety assurance assessments and inspections of airfields and landing sites.
  • Maintain the aviation safety database.
  • Provide safety briefings to personnel involved in UN aviation activities.
  • Support the organization and conduct of Mission Aviation Safety Council meetings.
  • Draft Safety Bulletins, Newsletters and consolidated Reports.
  • Coordinate with other UN agencies and host country aviation authorities.
Required Experience
  • A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in air transportation, air traffic control operations, aviation safety or aviation engineering, with at least one (1) year at the international level is required.
  • At least one position as an Aviation Safety Officer is required with expert knowledge in the technical field of aviation safety management and accident investigation and prevention and experience in the use of ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices.
  • Experience in the United Nations system or a comparable international organization, involved in international operations in a post conflict environment is desirable.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Training and certification in safety management is required.
  • Training as an aviation internal auditor or as accident investigator is desirable.
