Overview

The Senior Legal Associate will assist the Protection Unit in ensuring protection standards align with international standards and will support the Unit in implementing activities in cooperation with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations in the legal aid field. The role involves preparing legal advice, drafting position papers, and monitoring legal developments to inform advocacy and interventions.


Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Protection Unit in ensuring protection standards, operational procedures, and practices are in line with international standards.
  • Support the Unit in implementation of activities delivered in cooperation with Union of Turkish Bar Associations in legal aid field.
  • Assist in the preparation of legal advice and drafting of position papers and guidelines on pertinent legal and operational issues.
  • Monitor relevant legal developments and provide recommendations to inform the Unit’s advocacy and interventions.
  • Conduct research and follow judicial developments at the national and regional level.
  • Make briefings on legislative/judicial developments for briefing kits and internal papers.
  • Support the preparation of legal materials shared with national counterparts as recommendations.
  • Prepare compilation of good practices and comparative charts on a broad spectrum of topics and report developments.
  • Provide assistance in UNHCR's legal publications, dissemination of legal information on refugee law, UNHCR's legal website, and other legal advice as needed.
  • Support the Unit’s activities in strengthening the national capacity of relevant actors, including NGOs and lawyers, through organizing capacity-building activities.
  • Prepare materials and present topics for capacity-building activities.
  • Represent the Office externally on protection doctrine and policy as needed and under the guidance by the Head of the Unit.
Required Experience

Minimum 2 years of relevant professional experience in protection, asylum, migration management, or related areas.

Qualifications

Bachelor's or equivalent or higher in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Social Sciences or a related field.

Excellent knowledge of Turkish and fluency in English
Languages Preferred
Knowledge of other UN languages is an asset.
