Overview

The Humanitarian Affairs Officer will support Abuja-based coordination mechanisms and liaise with the Government of Nigeria. The role involves monitoring humanitarian developments and coordinating international assistance.


Key Responsibilities
  • Supports Abuja based coordination mechanisms, preparing agendas and position papers.
  • Manages liaison with the Government of Nigeria, including capacity building efforts.
  • Monitors, analyzes and reports on humanitarian developments and emergency situations.
  • Organizes and prepares studies on humanitarian issues and follow-up meetings.
  • Participates in missions, assists in coordinating international humanitarian assistance, and drafts situation reports.
  • Plans and evaluates humanitarian assistance programmes with other agencies.
  • Manages or assists in the production of appeals for international assistance and ensures proper use of donor contributions.
  • Establishes and maintains contacts with government officials, UN agencies, NGOs, and media.
  • Undertakes and supports technical assistance and field missions.
  • Prepares written reports, documents, and communications.
  • Serves as a focal point on specific topics or policy-related issues.
  • Reviews and advises on policy issues related to humanitarian principles and assistance delivery.
  • Organizes and participates in work groups, meetings, and conferences.
  • Provides guidance to and may supervise new/junior staff.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Required Experience

A minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in humanitarian affairs, emergency preparedness, crisis/emergency relief management, rehabilitation, development, or other related area is required. Humanitarian experience in the field (actual setting where a mission and/or project is being implemented) in emergency situations (complex emergency or natural disaster) is required. Experience in a humanitarian context within the UN common system or in a comparable international organization is desirable. Experience in West and Central Africa region is desirable.

Qualifications

An advanced university degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in political science, social science, international studies, public administration, economics, engineering, earth sciences or a related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with an additional two (2) years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
