Overview

This internship supports the Office of the Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa by contributing to analysis, research, coordination, and project management tasks related to preventive diplomacy, mediation, and peacebuilding.


Key Responsibilities
  • Assist research and analysis on the intersection between climate change, peace, and security dynamics across the Horn of Africa;
  • Assist with monitor and analyzing political, social, and security developments relevant to climate risks and conflict trends in the region.
  • Assist in tracking and mapping online trends affecting peace and political processes in the region;
  • Assist with the preparation of analytical reports, talking points, background papers, and meeting notes.
  • Assist in organising and documenting workshops, dialogues, and coordination meetings;
  • Assist with project management and tracking;
  • Draft summaries and analyses of academic, policy, and media reports relevant to the Office’s thematic priorities;
  • Support data collection and visualisation for internal briefings and presentations;
  • Proofreading/copyediting of team document, including translation if relevant;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme.

Qualifications
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor's degree).
  • Strong analytical and research skills, particularly in political science, international relations, environmental security, or communications;
  • Familiarity with the political and security landscape of the Horn of Africa;
  • Understanding of the relationship between climate change, conflict, and security.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English;
  • Proficiency in standard software applications, particularly MS Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Excel.
  • Knowledge of data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau, Adobe InDesign) is an asset.
  • Awareness of current challenges related to climate, peace and security in the region
  • Prior exposure to project management support functions, including updating workplans, monitoring progress against deliverables, and assisting with budget-related tracking.

knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage

Remuneration
The United Nations does not financially remunerate interns. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
