Overview
The Architect role is responsible for the integral control and monitoring of the implementation of construction projects in the architecture specialty, ensuring compliance with quality, budget, and schedule, and promoting resilient, safe, and sustainable construction aligned with UNOPS standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and manage daily construction activities to ensure compliance with project specifications, approved plans, and contractual obligations.
- Monitor construction progress and contractor performance to ensure timely, cost-effective, and high-quality delivery.
- Identify and report potential delays, risks, and cost overruns, recommending and implementing corrective actions.
- Supervise construction works in accordance with contractual provisions, verifying consistency with Bills of Quantities (BoQs) and approved schedules.
- Review and evaluate contractor payment claims, variation orders, and extension requests for accuracy and compliance.
- Maintain adequate project documentation, including progress reports, site records, and meeting minutes.
- Represent UNOPS in site meetings, coordination forums, and stakeholder consultations.
- Ensure effective communication and coordination with contractors, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
- Enforce UNOPS quality standards and project-specific quality assurance plans.
- Conduct ongoing inspections and material/equipment testing to ensure conformity with design specifications and quality criteria.
- Review contractor quality control procedures, inspection reports, and material certifications.
- Prepare and track quality control documentation, including inspection checklists, test records, and non-conformance reports.
- Provide technical guidance to contractors and field personnel to ensure continuous improvement in construction quality.
- Contribute to the implementation of UNOPS HSSE management systems on the project site.
- Support periodic safety inspections, safety talks, and risk assessments.
- Promote environmental sustainability and integrate 'green building' practices.
- Ensure contractor personnel receive adequate training and supervision in occupational safety, environmental management, and emergency preparedness.
- Monitor and report incidents, near misses, and corrective actions.
- Track project progress against work plans, milestones, and performance targets.
- Prepare detailed weekly and monthly reports covering progress, quality, health and safety, environment, and finances.
- Support the preparation of Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs), contract close-out documentation, and project completion reports.
- Maintain complete site records, including field diaries, inspection reports, correspondence, and photographic evidence.
- Participate in project review meetings, ensuring timely follow-up of actions and decisions.
- Support the organization, facilitation, and delivery of training and learning sessions in project management and construction management.
- Participate in knowledge sharing initiatives and Communities of Practice (CoPs).
- Conduct research on infrastructure and project management topics.
Required Experience
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in the construction phase of buildings, site supervision, or infrastructure project management.
- Experience in quality control, monitoring, and reporting within construction projects.
- Demonstrable competence in using collaboration and productivity tools (e.g., MS Office, G-Suite, etc.) and web-based management systems.
- Desirable: Relevant experience in hospital or healthcare buildings, supervision, construction, or design.
- Desirable: Experience working in multicultural environments or UN system organizations in developing countries.
- Desirable: Experience in development or humanitarian contexts.
- Desirable: Experience in project documentation, report writing, and technical communication.
- Desirable: Experience in construction management and supervision using BIM and Construction Management Technologies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Architecture or related fields, with 2 years of relevant experience.
- Master's degree (or equivalent) in any of the above or related fields will be an asset.
- Desirable: Recognized national or international professional certification in Hospital Architecture.
